What's the difference between calico cats and tortoiseshell cats?

I know they're not breeds, just fur types or whatever. But what's the difference between calico-coloured cats and tortoiseshell-coloured cats? Why is it rare to get males of one type, and if you do get a rare male one, why are they sterile? 'Kay, thanks :)
